Rai was born in November 1, 1973 to a Tulu speaking Bunt family in Mangalore, Karnataka. The father of her, Krishnaraj passed away on the 18th of March, 2017 was an Army biologist. Her mom, Varinda, is a domestic worker. She has an elder brother, Aditya Rai, who is an engineer in the merchant navy. Rai’s film Dil Ka Rishta (2003) was produced by her brother and written by her mother.

Rai was a student in the school of Arya Vidya Mandir Secondary School. Rai attended her middle school through Jai Hind College for a year. She then enrolled in DG Ruparel College in Matunga which she passed with 90 percent marks in the HSC examinations. She was trained in music and dance for five years in her teens.
Her favorite topic was zoology, and she was initially interested in the possibility of a career in medicine. In the end she decided to pursue a career as an architect and began her studies at the Rachana Sansad’s Academy of Architecture. Aishwarya Rai is part of a Tuluva Bunt community. She was the child of an army scientist Krishnaraj Rai and a homemaker Vrinda Rai. Her older sister Aditya Rai was an engineer working in the Merchant Navy. She is Hindu in her faith.
In the past, she had been involved with model Rajeeev. Between 1999 and 2001 she was involved in an affair with Bollywood actor Salman Khan. The name of her was associated with the actor Vivek Oberoi.

The year 2002 saw her as a part-time actress in the movie Devdas together with Shahrukh Khan. The film was based on the novel Devdas which was written by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. It was a huge commercial success and received a special screening in the Cannes Film Festival. It was the highest-grossing production of this year, both in India and abroad.
